Tips

1. Be careful to not let your dog eat any wild mushrooms that you find growing in your yard. There are many types that can be toxic to dogs and can cause liver failure. If your dog does eat mushrooms, it is best to make them vomit to avoid any toxicity. Just come in to see us and we can take care of everything.

2. Be careful to keep antifreeze away from your pets as you prepare your car for the upcoming season.  Just a few laps of antifreeze can cause fatal kidney failure in dogs and cats. When purchasing antifreeze, look for the less toxic brands that do not contain ethylene glycol.

3. The Easter, Day & Tiger lily are poisonous to cats' kidneys. However, the Calla lily, Peace lily and Glory lily are not. Use caution when bringing these toxic plants into your house. A cat who has ingested just one leaf of these plants can show signs of illness in several hours. Clinical signs include vomiting and a decreased or lack of appetite. Please see your veterinarian right away if you suspect that your cat has ingested any part of these toxic lilies.

4. Select a pet-safe mulch in the spring. Avoid the use of cocoa bean mulch if you have pets. This mulch has the aroma of chocolate and if ingested can have the same toxic effect on pets as regular chocolate can.

5. Cautiously use insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers and vermin baits around your pets. Read the instructions carefully and if you think your pet may have ingested any of these chemicals, see a veterinarian right away.
